WYD Rio De Janiero 2013
World Day of Peace
Pope Benedict XVI Speaks To Young People
Dear young people,you are a precious gift for society,
Do not yield
to discouragement in the face of difficulties and
do not abandon yourselves
to false solutions which often seem
the easiest way to overcome problems.
Do not be afraid
to make a commitment,
to face hard work and sacrifice,
to choose the paths that demand
fidelity and constancy, humility and dedication.
Be confident
in your youth and
its profound desires for
happiness, truth, beauty and genuine love!
Live fully
this time in your life
so rich and so full of enthusiasm.
Realize that
you yourselves are an example and
an inspiration to adults,
even more so
to the extent that you seek
to overcome injustice and corruption and
strive to build a better future.
Be aware of your potential;
never become self-centered
but work for a brighter future for all.
You are never alone.
The Church
has confidence in you,
follows you,
encourages you and
wishes to offer you
the most precious gift she has:
the opportunity
to raise your eyes to God,
to encounter Jesus Christ,
who is himself justice and peace.
All you men and women throughout the world,
who take to heart the cause of peace:
peace is not a blessing already attained,
but rather a goal
to which each and all of us must aspire.
Let us look with greater hope to the future;
let us encourage one another on our journey;
let us work together to give our world
a more humane and fraternal face; and
let us feel a common responsibility
towards present and future generations,
especially in the task of training them
to be people of peace and
builders of peace.

The WYD Cross and Icon of Mary head to Brazil
The event marked the arrival to Brazil of the WYD Cross and the Icon of Our Lady and was attended by the Archbishop of São Paulo, Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, the Apostolic Nuncio to Brazil, Dom Lorenzo Baldisseri and the president of the CNBB, Cardinal Dom Raymundo Damasceno.
The missionaries Canção Nova (new song) were in charge of animation and the event featured testimonials from young people who participated in previous WYDs, theatrical performances, official launch of the World Youth Day Rio 2013 website, as well as performances by various well-known Brazilian Catholic singers such as Fr. Fábio de Mello, Father Reginaldo Manzotti, Father Juarez Castro, Dunga, Life Glitters, Eliana Ribeiro and others.
“The Cross is always a sign that Jesus Christ calls young people to meet Him. Similarly, the Icon of Our Lady indicates the maternal presence of the Mother of Jesus with the followers of Christ,” says Cardinal Odilo Scherer.
Between now and July 2013, the Cross and Icon will travel to the 275 dioceses in Brazil. There are also plans for celebrations in 19 Brazilian cities, all under the name Bote Fé.
In December 2012, the Cross and Icon will leave Brazil and visit Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile and Argentina. They return to Brazil in January 2013. The final leg of the Cross and Icon journey will take place in the South of Minas, in the Vale do Paraiba, and finally in the state of Rio de Janeiro, where they arrive in April 2013.[color]
World Youth Day ~ Rio De Janiero 2013
Preparations are underway to help over 20 youth from Immaculate Conception to journey in faith towards WYD (World Youth Day) 2013. Our WYD youth will be distributing their pictures at the Christmas Eve liturgies and on the back of each card is the following:
Dear friend in faith;
Faith is a gift, and I am learning about it here at
Immaculate Conception Parish. I am beginning to
see the importance of faith in my daily life decisions. You are already aware of it without even knowing by praying for youth like me to grow to be good, compassionate, and generous towards my neighbor.
Today I would like to ask you for a bit more to be
enriched through the possibility to gather with the
other youth from around the world with the Pope in
Rio De Janiero 2013. You could do this by contributing
for this at the Parish office, and also by filling out the information and clicking the "Donate" button, at the bottom of this page.
Any and all donations made to Immaculate
Conception Church will be receipted in the New Year.
We are keeping you in our prayers.
Pilgrim Discernment
World Youth Day is an intense experience of faith and requires that each pilgrim be able to discern and direct their own activity. Many of the experiences are directed toward your ongoing growth and development as a disciple of Christ. While the "official" events have a particular message and theme the pilgrim also encounters, joys, fears, and frustrations that test and expand their relationship with God and understanding of the Church. How a pilgrim responds to changes in diet, crowds, language barriers, challenging messages, group dynamics, delays, and hot weather will dictate much of their experience.
