Vocation Sunday

Sisters with Franciscans of Halifax

On Vocations Sunday May 14 & 15 we welcomed Sr. Teresa (vocation director), Sr. Ilaria, Sr. Edith-Marie, Sr.Gemma to Immaculate Conception. During the Homily the Sisters shared their vocational story, their call to holiness. We were captivated not only by their stories, but with their musical talents as they played "La Folia" by Antonio Vivaldi during the Offertory and "Magnum Mysterium" by Thomas Luis de Victoria.

We also gathered in Campbell Hall following each Mass to spend some time exploring what a vocation means with the Sisters and Brothers from the Franciscans of Halifax, Priests, Deacon and Parents and shared some refreshments and other vocational materials provided by the Knights of Columbus.

Prayer to Our Lady for Vocations
Most holy Virgin, who without hesitation
offered yourself to the Almighty
for the carrying out of his plan of salvation,
pour trust into the hearts of young people
so that there may always be zealous pastors
who are able to guide the Christian people on the way of life,
and consecrated souls who may know how to witness,
in chastity, poverty, and obedience,
to the freeing presence of your risen Son.
Amen.

Dear Brothers and Sisters!
The 48th World Day of Prayer for Vocations, to be celebrated on 15 May 2011, the Fourth Sunday of Easter, invites us to reflect on the theme: “Proposing Vocations in the Local Church”. Seventy years ago, Venerable Pius XII established the Pontifical Work of Priestly Vocations. Similar bodies, led by priests and members of the lay faithful, were subsequently established by Bishops in many dioceses as a response to the call of the Good Shepherd who, “when he saw the crowds, had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd”, and went on to say: “The harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few. Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest!” (Mt 9:36-38).

The vocation of humanity is to show forth the image of God and to be transformed into the image of the Father's only Son. This vocation takes a personal form since each of us is called to enter into the divine beatitude; it also concerns the human community as a whole. Click here.
